The impeccably bred Reckless Spending is a half-brother of a 16-length winning four-year-old maiden winner from last season, and it is not hard to see why his connections paid €68,000 for him at the store sales. It was telling that connections elected to introduce this Sholokhov gelding in the very race at Umma House they had won two years earlier with the now Grade 1-placed Down Memory Lane, and he certainly did not disappoint. Always in the first half of the field, he was unfortunate to make an error at a costly point in the race four-out as the favourite, a €100,000 Derby sale purchase, was upping the tempo, which put him on the back foot. But to his credit, he dug deep, responding gamely to remain on terms with the winner, as the pair pulled ten lengths clear in the quickest time on the card, ten seconds quicker than the average, ensuring it has to go down as a very promising start to his career.
