Monkfish stepped up from his debut run at Cragmore in February to win the four-year-old geldings’ maiden at Stowlin in April. Tracking the leader throughout, the son of Stowaway made steady progress over the final half a mile where he led on the run to the penultimate fence and kept on best to hold onto victory by half a length and in doing so produced the quickest time of the day which was 13 seconds faster than the day’s average. He is a half-brother to a dual track winner as well as being out of a daughter to the nine-time winner Martomick. Great confidence has to be taken from this performance that he is a potentially classy sort who looks like he could develop into an exciting youngster on the race track.
