Modern Man is a horse with a very likeable profile. Making his debut in one of the more notable four-year-old maiden races of the autumn campaign at Umma House, he finished a very encouraging third to the highly-taught of Skylight Hustle, a horse that was subsequently purchased privately by Robcour to go in training with Gordon Elliott, whilst the runner-up was sold for £200,000 to Nicky Henderson at the Tattersalls Cheltenham November Sale. Modern Man gave an indication of the depth contained within that race when he went on to win a four-year-old maiden at Dromahane on his very next start. Here he raced close to the pace throughout, but it was once making his move to the front early in the home straight that the superiority that he held over his rivals swiftly became clear. He was soon in control and just had to be kept up to his work to triumph. The second and third horses that chased him home both brought previous placed form into the race, whilst the fourth-place finisher, a newcomer, had cost €240,000 at the Derby sale.
