Tommy Pickles returned a transformed individual following the summer break, as he produced a dominant display at Aghabullogue earlier in the month. Ridden with more conservative tactics, having been responsible for forcing the pace on debut, the Shirocco gelding, a €75,000 Derby Sale purchase that is out of a half-sister to the Grade 1 Feltham Novice Chase winner Strong Flow, was not put into the race until after the penultimate fence. That was due to the ease at which he was able to travel into the contest, cruising into the lead before the final fence with his rider full of confidence. Once asked to extend, he swiftly proved himself to be a class above his rivals, winning by ten and a half lengths, without having to be asked any sort of a serious question.
