Although Cosmos D’Ainay, an €85,000 purchase from France as a two-year-old, recorded his maiden success at Borris House on his fourth start, he was extremely unlucky not to have done so earlier. On debut, the close relation of the Grade 1-placed Crystal D’Ainay, was in front and going well when falling two-out at Ballysteen in the maiden previously won by Faugheen. He returned at Loughrea in October when he was only beaten by just over a length to Un Sens A La Vie, a horse that was subsequently sold for £180,000 at the Tattersalls Cheltenham November sale, whilst his saddle slipped at an early point at Lisronagh and he had to be pulled up before the fourth fence. There was no such bad luck at Borris House at the beginning of the month as he put up a faultless performance to win as he pleased, defeating a €78,000 store purchase by two and a half lengths, but in reality, the margin of victory could have been much greater as Derek O’Connor only had to briefly shake the reins in order to put the race to bed, suggesting this a horse with an awful lot more to give.
