Bought for €100,000 at last year’s Derby Sale, The Irish Avatar was sent off as the favourite for his recent debut at Dromahane, where he posted a very promising effort to finish a close second. The son of Poet’s Word, a stallion that has already produced three four-year-old maiden winners this year from his first crop, including the recent £305,000 sales topper Largy Go, he always travelled nicely from a position on the outside of the field. Coming on terms around the home bend in what was a very tightly-grouped field entering the home straight, owing to the relatively steady tempo that was set, no fewer than nine horses were separated by three lengths. That ensured that the emphasis was very much on speed up the home straight, and he responded well when coming under pressure, keeping on to good effect, and only finding one rival too good. He should not have to wait long to go one place better.
