Tattersalls Cheltenham April Sale
Lot 29:
Crystal Island makes £205,000 and is bought by Jerry McGrath, sold by Eamonn Doyle's Mossy Fen Stables – he is the first sold by Doyle under a new banner.
"He is a beautiful horse by a very good up-and-coming sire and has a very bright future ahead of him", said Doyle. "He has gone to a good home and we were hoping for something around there."
He added: "I have branched out on my own a bit this year and this is the first sold under the new banner."
A €60,000 store horse purchase, the gelding is out of the Heron Island mare Je T’Aime, a half-sister to the Grade 1 Dr P J Moriarty Novice Chase winner J’Y Vole and the Listed Prix Wild Monarch Hurdle Jeanquiri, dam of Lifetime Ambition.
He was bought by McGrath for Tony Barney, owner of Jango Baie, the Grade 1 Arkle Chase winner and bought at the Tattersalls Cheltenham February Sale. He goes to Nicky Henderson.
"We saw this horse at the end of January, and this horse stood out then, a lovely horse and is a very likeable sort, the sire is doing well. He quickened going to the last, made a mistake, was a bit slow away and then picked up again from the back of the fence. He is going to run in Tony Barney's colours with a few friends."
Of Jango Baie's season, he said: "He won a Grade 1 over hurdles, a Grade 1 over fences, what more do you want? He lost nothing in defeat at Aintree, the first, second and fourth had missed Cheltenham and he was the only won who had also run at the Festival."

Lot 17:
the British point-to-pointer Karaka De Thaix is sold for £135,000, the son of the leading French sire Cokoriko was bought as a store horse for £13,000 by Dale Peters and Toby Hunt
He has been trained by and was ridden in his race, and also led up today, by Peters, and the five-year-old, winner of the Tattersalls Cheltenham-sponsored young horse maiden at Charm Park in March, but had to miss his first sale date at the Festival Sale, but the team got due recompense here.
"He is a lovely horse, he has done everything well all the way through, he has been a dream to do, I am really pleased," said Peters. "I think he is very good, I hope he goes to the top now. He fell asleep at the top and has come down to the ring and has come alive. Happy days!
"I would love to keep him but can't afford him!
Buyer was Anthony Bromley and he said: "He is for a client with Paul Nicholls, and he is an English point-to-pointer, French-bred and by a great sire who is having a good year again. It is a nice French AQPS pedigree.
"I have known Dale and Toby for years, they are genuine people, they have been telling me about this horse for a few weeks. We were interested in the horse at the Festival Sale but he was withdrawn, we kept an eye on him, I think he has done well for the couple of weeks and a break after the race. He looked magnificent today."
He added: "There is value to be had in the British pointing ranks, but that was our last bid.
Of the young horse series, Bromley added: "I think it is really important, we had pushed for that to happen because it is all well and good winning a race beating a bunch of nine-year-old maidens, and beating them easily, but we weren't learning anything. The teams trying to produce young horses they need to take each other on – that's how it has ot going in Ireland."

Lot 20:
Unflinching, also from Milestone Stables, makes £150,000 bought by Gordon Elliott Racing.
The five-year-old by Montmarte won his point-to-point on debut at Dromahane, and is out of the Listed placed mare Kapirovska, ridden by Barry O'Neill.

(18:25)
Lot 7:
The Irish Avatar, one of the expected horses this evening, sells for 200,000gns, bought by Harold Kirk, who was standing by the door.
The son of the exciting young Baordsmill Stud-based sire Poet's Word was sold by Colin Bowe's Milestone Stables and was a four-year-old debut runner-up at Dromahane’s meeting on April 6.
He is out of the Grade 3-winning and Grade 1-placed hurdler Dinaria Des Obeaux (Saddler Maker)
Bowe said after the sale: "He has been a lovely horse right from the first day we bought him. He is out of a very good race mare and the stallion can do no wrong – he got the winner of the bumper here today and his stats are very good."
Bowe added: "He has gone to a very good home, there is loads of improvement in him, he is a big scopey sort - he was beaten by a very sharp horse on his debut."
Poet's Word is also sire of the four-year-old debut winner Taurus Bay, who fetched £155,000 at the Tattersalls Cheltenham February Sale and was the sale's third top lot.
The gelding has been through the Fairyhouse sale ring twice – he was bought as a foal by Joey Logan at the Tattersalls November NH Foal Sale for €85,000, and at the Tattersalls Ireland Derby Sale by Milestone Bloodstock for €100,000.
Successful purchaser Harold Kirk said: "“The sire’s on fire. He’s had a fantastic point-to-point season and he had the winner of the bumper here today. This horse is out of a very good racemare by Saddler Maker, whom I love. He’s a beautiful individual and was highly recommended for the long term by Colin Bowe.
“He ran well on debut, but he’s a big backward horse. Colin think he’ll improve plenty into next year. He’s a lovely individual. It’s enough [money] for a horse that finished second but he’s a lovely individual so I knew he’d make good money.
“The sire was a very good racehorse. I bought another one by him off I bought another Poet’s Word at the Aintree Sale off Tom Lacey, so I’m supporting the stallion a bit.”

Lot 25:
"I have been lucky buying from Tom and Gina before, this is a fine big horse with a pedigree and hopefully he will be lucky," said Gordon Elliott after going to £95,000 for the five-year-old Panjandrum (Blue Bresil), winner of a maiden at Chaddesley Corbett in December. "He has been bought on spec."
"I am pleased with that," said Tom Ellis. "He is nice horse, and is going to a good home – Gordon bought Touch Me Not from us. The British point-to-pointers have been flying and it is great – I think due in part to numbers as there are a few graduates going under Rules now."
The gelding is by Blue Bresil, who ability as a sire was, of course, well advertised today with the emphatic victory of Constitution Hill in the Unibet Hurdle (G2).
Touch Me Not was a Grade 2 winner in the autumn and a Grade 1 runner-up in the Henry VIII Novice Chase in December.
(17:54)
Lot 10:
Karate Kid is bought by Tessa Greatrex of Highflyer for Jim and Clare Bryce, owners of Rhonehurst Stables, base for trainer Warren Greatrex.
"Jim and Clare had a runner today, I don't think they were initially intending to buy, but I saw the horse yesterday and recommended him," said Greatrex. "We were impressed with the bumper win, he beat some nice horses and he looks a smart horse for the future."
The Colm Ryan Racing-trained Karate Kid, a five-year-old by Spanish Moon and winner of his bumper at Leopardstown at the end of December, was owned by John Haynes.
(17:31)
Lot 6:
is bought by Richard Johnson, who was sat ring side and in charge of bidding taking instructions over the phone, for £230,000.
He was purchasing on behalf of Gwent Holdings, and the five-year-old gelding will be going into training with Philip Hobbs and Johnson White. It is the second-best price given for a horse sold at the Tattersalls Cheltenham January Sale.
"We all looked at him and we all liked him."said Johnson White, adding: "He has been bought for Dave Lewis of Gwent Holdings. He has five horse with us and they have been running great. I wanted this horse since the moment I saw him, Richard saw him yesterday and liked him and he was on our short lists.
"He is an exciting horse to go forward with. We will get him home and assess him, I would love to give him a run in the spring to keep things rolling on for next season. We will see how he comes out of this, it can be tough for them to win their point-to-point, travel here – it takes a bit to get over it."
"Dave is keen to have a few more, we bought last year and they have run well and is keen to move forward again," said former champion jumps jockey Johnson, who is helping with purchasing plans. "Everyone wants winners at Cheltenham and that is where we want to get. This looks a lovely horse, and will be one for the future, he is a proper 3m chaser and it might take him two years for him to reach his potential."
Of buying horses, Johnson laughed: "It is not as good as riding! But I love to see the horses go on to do well and have a future."

Tattersalls Cheltenham December Sale
Lot 16:
Frankie John sells for 275,000gns, Tom Malone outbidding Mouse O'Ryan.
Consignor Denis Hogan, who paid €115,000 Derby Sale for the son of Walk In The Park at the 2023 Derby Sale, said: "He is a gorgeous horse, he was bought to come back here. Not every horse gets here, so to be here and get that sort of money is brilliant, he is owned by myself and John Mahon so it is great.
"We probably went a bit strong to buy him, you have to in order to get them – it has paid off today, it doesn't always. He has a pedigree, he is model, athletic, he has got pace, he stays and he jumps, he is big and bold.
"When he ran I was worried he might be green, which he was, but I liked the way he went to the line. Hopefully he goes on and does big things and the buyers come back again."
Hogan is from Tipperary, and combines training with producing horses to sell, and buys "around 10 each year". Hogan sold Mahons Way a couple of years ago for a "lot of money and the proceeds went towards this guy"!
Tom Malone said: "Denis Hogan was telling me about this horse for the last six months and has been banging the drums about him. The horse was impressive at the line at Boulta, but he passed one of Donnchadh Doyle's and to outstay one of the Donnchadh when it is hitting the line, you have a good race, there is not doubt about it. He didn't pull up until the far fence, and I love that and around that course especially.
"I like the horse, he is by Walk In The Park which speaks for itself and he is a lovely horse."
(17:22)
Lot 6:
was bought by Ed Bailey Bloodstock / O'Neill Racing for 160,000gns – the well-related Kaka’s Cousin (Mahler), consigned by Sean Doyle’s Monbeg Stables is out of a half-sister to the multiple Grade 1-winning Oscar Whisky.
She just missed out on her maiden victory by a short head to Clay Pigeons in a fast-run maiden at Boulta on December 7 and was bought for €62,000 at the store sales last year
(16:51)
Lot 5:
one of the expected highlights of the day did not disappoint, the well-bred four-year-old filly Heron In The Park selling for 280,000gns, bought by Tom Morgan from Donnchadh Doyle's Monbeg Stables. Underbidder was Harry Derham and Ed Bailey.
"She has been bought as a racing and breeding prospect," said Morgan, bidding on behalf of owner Damian Tiernan . "She is for The Jekyll partnership who owned Mrs Hyde, and we are going to do down the same route as her – run in a bumper and hopefully get a bit of black-type, and go from there!
"We have not made any firm plans yet, we just wanted to come and buy a nice mare as a breeding prospect. Damian had Mrs Hyde with Fergal [O'Brien] and had a lot of success so we wanted to repeat that.
"We loved the way this filly travelled and jumped in her race and she has lots of residual value.
"One of those involved owns one of the best French jumping colts Nietsche Has, he has gone to stud and she is likely to be be mated to him further down the line."
Heron In The Park is by Walk In The Park and is a half-sister to the Grade 2 Betfred Hurdle winner and Christmas Hurdle (G1) runner-up Glory And Fortune.
She made the perfect start to her career at Borris House at the beginning of December when the impressive hands and heels and a 9l winner of a fast-run four-year-olds’ mares’ maiden.

Tattersalls Cheltenham November Sale
Lot 21:
Un Sens A La Vie, a four-year-old gelding by Muhtathir sold by Ballyboy Stables is bought by William Twiston Davies for £180,000.
The four-year-old won on his second career start at Loughrea after finishing third on his debut last spring.
It has been a great day for the Twiston-Davies family today with Tattersalls Cheltenham December Sale graduate Potters Charm winning the Grade 2 Albert Bartlett Novices Hurdle at Cheltenham today.
"The sire speaks for himself and we loved him when we saw him, he is a real Nigel Twiston-Davies type of horse, a real future stayer, we are trying to build and grow and you have to spend some money, he has been bought for the El Rincon Partnership who own Potters Charm,"said Twiston Davies, who as bought three horses tonight. "He looks like a nice type to run in bumpers in the spring and hurdles and chases to come."
(18:14)
Lot 7:
Jerry McGrath on Reckless Spending.
On whether the horse is well named…. “Time will tell I suppose! That price was at the top end of our valuation and we’d have been out after that.”
“He’s for Nicky Henderson and Martin George. He’s a horse we tried to buy privately but he had to come to the sales. Obviously the winner of that race was sold for an awful lot of money, he was three lengths in front of this horse, and they pulled ten lengths clear of the third. Nicky Henderson has had brilliant luck with the sire; he can get you a Champion Chaser or a Gold Cup horse. Hopefully he’ll be a nice horse going forward.”
(17:48)
Lot 11:
Onefournine is bought by Matt Coleman for £170,000, who said: "She is a highly recommended by Colin [Bowe], she is a beautiful scopey filly who won impressively. I like that she is a first foal out of a proper black-type mare who proved herself at the level several times, the mare also stayed 3m strongly and this filly stayed to the line very well, too.
"She seems very level headed and it is a lovely pedigree of stayers. She is a big scopey girl and I think she will mature with time and age. She did everything right in her race, she is very good model out of a talented race mare. She has all the ingredient to be a good racemare. AJ and Jonjo will train her, ownership is in discussion!"
(17:46)
Lot 8:
one of the expected highlights of the sale does not disappoint, Kovanis selling for £330,000 to Gordon Elliott Racing.
Kovanis, a four-year-old by Tunis and out of the French-bred mare Nova D’Auteuil and from the family of Jonbon, the seven-time Grade 1 winner and victor of the Grade 2 Shloer Chase today, from Caherty Stables, trained by Gerald Quinn for Philip McBurney Racing, was the hugely impressive winner in the maiden at Portrush at the beginning of October. Sent off favourite then, jockey Noel McParlan hardly had to move to secure the win.
"We are delighted, he showed himself well all week, he is a class act, we were expecting to come here and, hopefully, go well, and he has done it," said Quinn, a one-time conditional jockey with Jonjo O'Neill and with 50 point-to-pointers in his stable. "He has always been a very relaxed horse, whenever you asked a question he always showed. We were expecting on his debut, his home work was very good.
"It is stressful, it is getting them ready and whenever you come here you always want to top the sale."
Buyer was Gordon Elliott, Eddie O'Leary, sat alongside the trainer, having entered the bidding at £300,000, said: "He is a nice horse, he has come well recommended, he travelled in his race like a good horse. I will imagine he will go for a bumper in the spring, he looks a nice big horse and one to go forward."

were all bought by Tom Malone and he gave a run through of the trio of purchases.
"Sober Glory is a lovely horse and I have bought him on behalf of Brocade Racing to go to Philip Hobbs, he is by Mount Nelson who is doing very well but sadly is not around any more. Lot
5, Tiptoptim, he is also by Mount Nelson and he was very impressive when he ran and Rob James gave him a good old write up. I think he was value for a 7l maiden winner - he has been bought on spec."
"French Emperor (Lot
31), the son of Clovis du Berlais, was third at Loughanmore. I bought the winner of the race privately, and the form stands up well. Nicky Martin is going to train him."
(14:18)
Lot 10:
Sober Glory (Mount Nelson), is sold by Monbeg Stables (Cormac Doyle) and bought by Tom Malone for £110,000. He was bought by Mount Eaton Stud for €41,000 as a foal at the Tattersalls November NH Sale in 2020.
He was an impressive winner at Bartlemy on his career debut.
He is closely related to Fingal Bay and is out of a Milan's Fingal (Milan), a half-sister to the Grade 1 Challow Novice Hurdle winner and multiple graded race performer Fingal's Bay.
Doyle said: "Mount Eaton still owned him and we have had a lot of luck with the May Sale, and hopefully he is going to be very lucky for him. We always liked this horse his work was very good at home and we were very confident going to Bartlemy that day. We like to keep a few back for it, and hold a nice one for it, the timing is good."
(14:03)
Lot 22:
American Jukebox, a four-year-old son of the in-form sire Jukebox Jury, ran a close second on debut in a fast-run race at Stowlin, sold by Monbeg Stables (Donnchadh Doyle) for £100,000.
His dam American Jennie (Lord Americo) was a Grade 2 and Grade 3-winning hurdler, who finished third and fourth in the Irish Grand National (G1).

He was purchased today by Eddie O'Leary for Gordon Elliott, who said: "He is a fine horse, he is not for anyone in particular, we will get him home first. We have the half-brother and this horse is similar but a bit smaller maybe. He is young horse not even four yet - we saw him earlier in the spring and liked him then."
Doyle, on crutches after a schooling incident seven weeks ago, said: "He is a lovely horse, we had American Mike. He ran well on the day and he could be a very smart horse after a summer's grass. He will be a lovely horse in time. Hopefully, he will go on to do some good things now."
(13:53)
Lot 12:
Ross Crawford makes the pinhooking return of the sale selling Marlacoo (Wings Of Eagles) for £85,000 having purchased the gelding for just €1,250 at last year's Tattersalls Ireland July Sale. The horse was bought by Highflyer.
The horse has subsequently won a Down Royal bumper for his Crawford's brother trainer Stuart Crawford.
"Delighted, that is what we a re trying to do buy cheap, produce them well and, hopefully, turn a profit – to be fair he was very very cheap on that day,"smiled Crawford. "He probably a bit small as a store, but he has grown since I have had him, he was raw and green and backward and I had a bit of luck then, too.
"I was offered profit after I bought him, but turned that down and stuck with him."
Crawford explained how he approaches purchasing stock: "At the store sales I keep the catalogue in my pocket and just take it to see if I can afford the horse! I did not expect to get him for that and would have paid more for him, but that is what we are trying to do is just buy as cheap as we can.
"It is a product of around 12 days work, a bit of work and graft."
The horse was sent down the bumper route, and Crawford explained: "He lost a bit of time in the autumn because of a cold and his jumping was a little bit behind where it needed to be from a greenness point of view.
"He jumps well, but those four-year-old spring point to points they have to be on the money and he just wasn't streetwise enough – even in his bumper he was probably still a bit green."
Purchaser Anthony Bromley said: "He has been bought for a syndicate, he will have a summer out on grass and a trainer will be decided later. Wings Of Eagles is getting a few winners on the board now and they look to have engines."
(13:42)
Lot 8:
Ian Ferguson goes to £80,000 for Moon Over America (Sea Moon), a four-year-old debut winner at Dawstown, ridden and trained by Rob James.
"He for the Options O Syndicate run by Steve Wignall, and goes to Nigel Twiston-Davies," said Ferguson. "The sydnicate owned the useful Ballyandy, and this is a fine horse and came highly recommended by Rob James. He is a chaser in the making."
He is by Sea Moon and out of Academy Miss, an unraced Kings Theatre mare and an own-sister to the Grade 3 winner and Grade 1-placed Academy Sir Harry.

Malone said: "He is a lovely big scopey chaser, Rob James won on him and rode him like a proper stayer. The horse came well recommended by Donnchadh Doyle. I have had luck with Mahlers and this horse probably has a bit of a pace – in every stage of his race he travelled well. He won well and did his job well."

The horse, who was bought in France by Roger Marley, also made the perfect start to his career when winning the 4yo+ maiden at Corbridge on April 20, when ridden by Teal.
"It's is a great place for him to go," said Teal. "I have about 24 pointers in training, a mix of older horses and sales horses. Roger bought this horse and sent him to me when he got busy with yearlings."
Teal added: "I used to ride for Roger a bit but we met out hunting, we had plenty of crack then, and then we progressed from then."
(13:55)
Lot 13:
On The Bayou, a four-year-old by Affinisea, and an 8l career debut winner at Castletown-Geoghegan, is sold by Sean Doyle’s Monbeg Stables to Kevin Ross for £140,000.
He is out of a three-time winning mare Inis Ceithleann, who won the Flat and over hurdles, and was bought as a store horse at the Derby Sale for €55,000.
Ross said: "He is for Harry Fry. I really like the individual, he won well and has been highly recommended by Pat Doyle and Sean Doyle. We have been lucky with the sire for Harry and we were keen to get him. He is a nice quality horse and I really liked the way he jumped the last, he jumped like a fresh horse.
"We had to push the boat out a little more than we had originally planned."
(13:40)
Lot 9:
the five-year-old Ruckers Road, a €30,000 store horse purchase by Malinas, won on his second career start at Ballycrystal building on his career debut when third at Lisronagh.
He was sold by Matty Flynn O’Connor’s Ballycrystal Stables and bought by Hamish Macauley.
He is out of an own-sister to the Listed Flat winner Party Boss and is closely related to the multiple Grade 1 winner Countrywide Flame.
"He has been bought for Leslie Young in the US," reported Macauley. "She saw him after he was third first time out and was keen after he absolutely bolted up last weekend. He is one of the ones she wanted today and we are delighted to get. Malinas goes very well in the US – I bought one for a different trainer and he was the jumps horse of the year out there. I have bought another for Leslie who has won a couple of races.
"This horse is a very good moving horse and he will start off over hurdles – he should have enough pace and will go on fast ground. Will do either job out there and could end up timber racing, but he has been bought to go hurdling.
"We had five winners in the US last weekend so things are going well."
