Lot 15: Sam Curling's Skehanagh Stables-offered gelding Lord Of Thunder makes £165,000. He was second on his racing debut to Mt Fugi Park (Lot 8).

The five-year-old gelding by Getaway was pinhooked at the 2021 Tattersalls Ireland Derby Sale for €55,000 by Brendan Bashford, and was a previous November NH Sale foal graduate when sold to Castletown House for €20,000.

Bred by Parkville Stud, Lord Of Thunder is from the extended family of the Grade 1 winners and performers – Harbour Pilot, winner of the Drinmore Novice Chase (G1) and twice third in the Cheltenham Gold Cup (G1), Get Me Out Of Here, runner-up in the Supreme Novices Hurdle (G1), and Glamorgan Duke, winner and placed in the Leopardstown Handicap Chase (G1). Lot 8: becomes the first lot to sell today to make over £100,000 is Mt Fugi Park, a five-year-old gelding by Walk In The Park sold by Monbeg Stables, Ireland (D. Doyle).

The bidding opened up at £100,000, rocketed up to £200,000, and concluded at £290,000 to a bid from Matt Coleman of Stroud Coleman Bloodstock with Jonjo O'Neill Racing.

Coleman said: "He came highly recommended by the Monbeg guys and you can see the stamp of horse he is, he’s a beautiful model and he seems to have a very good brain. He jumped and travelled away in his point-to-point and hit the line very strongly.

"He was actually quite green in his race, he pricked his ears going to the last. He’s what you’re trying to buy when you buy a NH horse. He’s by one of the top stallions, is a great-looking horse and was well recommended.

"He’s the sort of horse we are trying to get at Jackdaws Castle and, hopefully, he’ll be successful. I’m not sure about an owner at the moment but I’ve bought him with Jonjo. He looks like a good horse so let’s hope he is.”

By the star sire Walk In The Park, Mt Fugi Park is out of the Presenting mare The Real Athlete, the dam of the five-time winner and Grade 2 placed hurdler and chaser, Real Milan. It is the further family of the Grand National and Long Walk Hurdle winner Royal Athlete.

Bred by Vincent and Jimmy Lawler, he was bought by Park Farm as a foal at the 2018 Tattersalls Ireland November NH Sale for €42,000.

The Donnachadh Doyle-trained five-year-old gelding won his point-to-point on his first career start at Bellharbour on the first weekend in February, beating the Getaway gelding Lord Of Thunder (Lot 15), who was also making a career debut for trainer Sam Curling.

It is a maiden point-to-point with a good race record – the race was won last year by Fact To File, winner of a bumper at Leopardstown in December and second to Dream To Share in the Leopardstown Grade 2 bumper held on the Dublin Festival weekend. Fact to File is now a 10-1 chance for the Weatherbys Champion Bumper at The Festival. (13:25)

Lot 18: Lisa Hales, who was bidding on behalf of her father owner John Hales, went to £190,000 to buy the Blue Bresil four-year-old gelding Sao Carlos, a Market Rasen Boxing Day bumper winner for trainer Olly Murphy.

Sao Carlos is out of the King’s Theatre mare Valleyofthedolls, and is a half-sister to the Grade 2 Aintree bumper winner Diamond Sal, the Grade 3 chaser Ring The Boss and a half-brother to Theatre Girl, who was a Listed bumper winner and Grade 2 placed over hurdles.

“She is will probably be for Dad, Sir Alex Ferguson, Ged Mason and John Driver, the same syndicate that owns Hermes Allen,” reported Hales, who added: “This horse has got an amazing walk, an amazing presence, he is substantial and looks like a chaser for the future, and that is what we like.

“In fact, I backed this horse when he ran, and before I knew he was coming here, I thought he put in a great run then.” (18:28)

Lot 14: Breeder-trainer Michael Hickey of Sunnyhill Stud admitted he had not trained a winner for ten years until Magic Dawn (Lot 14) won for him at Punchestown on New Year’s Eve.

Bred by Hickey from the farm’s leading family of the Gold Cup winner Kicking King, Magic Dawn is a six-year-old mare by the stud’s resident stallion Doyen.

She is out of the unraced mare Magic Maze, whose three runners so far are all winners and are headed by this filly’s full-sister Magic Daze, a Grade 2 winner over fences and placed in the Dawn Run Novices Hurdle (G2) at The Festival 2021.

“She is a gorgeous mare, she has great presence, great walker and magic temperament,” said Hickey. “She needed her first run, but four winners came out of that race and then she won her next race very well, I think she has a huge future.”

He added: “The intention was to maybe race her and, if she won a little race, then cover her and keep her for breeding. However, we started to train her and was show that bit extra – when she won her race she became too valuable for us to keep, we do have to balance the books!”

Luckily, Hickey has plenty of representatives from the family in the broodmare band at home, and Magic Maze is in-foal to sire-of-the-moment, Blue Bresil.

Mouse, who went to £185,000 to secure the filly on behalf of KTDA Racing, which has horses in training with Elliott, said: “She couldn’t have been more impressive when she won, and the family speaks for itself. I tried to buy her privately but Michael is a hard man to deal with! We will be aiming her for something like the Aintree bumper.” (18:26)

Lot 8: Wingmen, a five-year-old son of Kayf Tara, trained and sold by Gordon Elliott for the Crocodile Pockets Syndicate, made £250,000.

The son of Kayf Tara was the 12l winner of a Ballycrystal maiden last Sunday, when ridden by Rob James. He beat Backtonormal (Lot 23).

“He is a very nice horse, Gordon thinks a lot of him. He is a big raw horse, he won’t be a horse until next year, he is for Bective Stud,” said buyer Eddie O’Leary.

Bred by Cathal Ennis, Wingmen is out of the winning Flemensfirth mare Raise You Five, and is a dual Tattersalls Ireland graduate – he was initially purchased as a foal at the November NH Sale by Timmy Hillman for €47,000, who then consigned the gelding under his Castledillon Stud banner at the 2021 Derby Sale when bought by Mags O’Toole for €88,000. Lot 41: "Delighted, I have had him since he was a foal, he has been a beautiful horse all the way through, I bought him from his breeder Billy Mangan, he breeds some beautiful foal, it is pleasure to visit him and look at his foals," said consignor John Costello after selling What's Up Darling for £280,000.

Costello added: "It is a relief as there is five years of hard work gone into this horse, I wouldn't be here tonight without the hard work of my sons. On the same day, ten minutes apart, I bought Search For Glory and What's Up Darling. They have both come here to this ring and they have made a lot of money. You never know what day your luck is in."

Costellos's sons are Ronan and Conor, who led up the horse and rode him last Sunday.

Search For Glory was bought at the April Sale 2021 for £200,000, by Gordon Elliott Racing, today's purchaser of What's Up Darling.

"He is a lovely horse, the video was very good, we have been lucky with the vendor, hopefully he is a nice horse going forward," said Elliott. "I am not sure yet who will own him, we will get him home first."

By Shirocco, What's Up Darling won a five-year-olds maiden at Quakerstown last weekend having unseated on his first start last spring. He is out of the winning Flemensfirth mare Carries Darling and a grandson of Knock Down (Oscar), a Grade 3 chase winner in France. (18:32)

Lot 38: the pinhook result of the evening goes to the O'Donovan family – Shanagh Bob was bought at the Tattersalls Ireland August Sale for just €10,000 and the son of Mahler sells today for £200,000 bought by David Minton of Highflyer Bloodstock.

Son Chris O'Donovan was at Cheltenham to oversee the sale and rode the four-year-old to victory last weekend at Ballindenisk.

"Me and my girlfriend ride out in the morning for a variety of people, and do the horses in the evenings, sometimes they nearly need headlights on! The whole family is involved, thank god it has worked out well. It is brilliant when it pays off.

"People tell you that you are going to get this and that but you never know until they go in. Our biggest result before sold for £60,000, we are very happy."

"He has always from day one looked a good horse, we are thrilled. He has never put in a bad piece of work, from day one he has been a pleasure."

"He was in very early and it was luck! Hopefully, he goes on to do some great things."

O'Donovan's girlfriend Joanna Walton led the horse up tonight.

David Minton said: "I have waited for him, I loved the horse yesterday, I loved him even more today. His performance last Sunday was very good. Nicky won with a Mahler today so he is very up on Mahler."

He added: "He sold in the COVID sale and we were not allowed to get to Ireland!" (18:19)

Lot 15: Gareth Maule, signing as Gwent Holdings, is the new owner of the Lingstown point-to-point winner Getaway gelding Simple Getaway, bought for £180,000. He was bought by Monbeg Stable at the Tattersalls Derby Sale 2021 for €52,000.

The four-year-old gelding from the family of the Grade 1 winners Alexander Banquet and Wither Or Which is going to join the Bridgend-based trainer Christian Williams.

He said: "I am looking forward to training him, we are trying to buy a nice type of horse. Getaway has been quite lucky for us, Five Star and Striclty who looks exciting. We will get him home, he came highly recommended. Gareth has been a big supporter from the start and has been involved in the ownership of Potters Corner and Limited Reserve.

"He ran in November, we might look to a bumper in the New Year, his new owner is very patient." (17:33)

Lot 13: Simon Davies of DahlBury Stud, another enthusiastic investor in bloodstock, spent £ 145,000 on Ah Whisht (Getaway) with Ballymaw Bloodstock , the winner of a Necame five-year-old maiden for handler Ross O’Sullivan.

“She will be going to trainer Tom Symonds,” said Davies, who has around 20 horses in training.. “We will get her home and Tom can decide on the plan, but ideally we will crack on with her.

“She has a page, and she has residual value as a breeding prospect and she will return to the stud eventually. She will suit any of the stallions at Chapel Stud.” (17:18)

Lot 4: our first six-figure lot is the Rae Guest-trained bumper-winning filly Kutaiba, a three-year-old by Golden Horn. She fetched £150,000, and was bought by Guest at the Tattersalls December Mares Sale 2021 from the Shadwell draft for just £10,000.

Jayne McGivern of Dash Grange Stud has recently been investing in the bloodstock, and in the autumn announced her purchase of the Derby winner and former Darley stallion Golden Horn as a dual purpose prospect to stand at Overbury Stud, almost in sight of Prestbury Park.

“I have bought her to race, she will come home for a short holiday and go into training in the New Year,” reported McGivern. (16:35)
